Yogyakarta student wins Google Code-in Competition 2017

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Abu Bakar Islamic High School, Yogyakarta, student Fawwaz Yusran from OpenMRS along with two other Indonesians won the grand prize in Google Code-in Competition (GCI) 2017 organized by Google that involved students from countries worldwide. They outperformed thousands of students from developed countries, such as Romania, India, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Uruguay, Poland, and also the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Fawwaz's mother, Maharani, remarked that 3,551 students had participated in the GCI 2017, and they had completed 16,468 tasks. As the GCI 2017 winner, Fawwaz along with his father Muhamad Yusro, who is the founder of Rumah Jagoan Coding, will be invited to the Google Headquarters in California, Mountain View, for four days in June. 

"Besides this, Fawwaz received a digital certificate from Google, a GCI t-shirt, and an exclusive hooded sweater," Maharani who is a Mathematics lecturer at the Jenderal Soedirman University, noted here on Monday. 

Maharani further revealed that her son had been involved in coding or programming. Since studying in Junior High School in Colchester Academy, the United Kingdom, Fawwaz was familiar with creating simple online games that could be accessed through game developer community sites.

Fawwaz usually created games using the drag and drop method in blocks containing commands and sorted according to wish. Once Fawwaz was able to create simple games, his father, a lecturer and entrepreneur in Computer and Information Technology, introduced him to one of the object-oriented programming languages called Java.

Fawwaz began creating simple gaming programs in Java on his desktop computer. He was also interested in the game engine called Unity3D, so he attempted to create a game for mobile phones and desktop computers using it.

After returning to Indonesia and registering at SMAIT Abu Bakar, Fawwaz showed interest in developing mobile-based software for Android and iOS platforms. He continued to learn designing and developing Android applications and uploaded them on Google Play Store with the assistance of his father.

To celebrate Teacher's Day, Fawwaz had designed an Android application that utilized Augmented Reality technique as a prize for his teachers. This application worked by scanning pictures of his teachers in school and displayed the messages of Teacher's Day on smartphones.

In early February, search engine company Google officially released the lists of winners and finalists on https://opensource.googleblog.com following tough competition between the participants for seven weeks, starting from November last year to January.

CGI is an online programming competition organized by Google for students in the age group of 13 to 17 years from across the world. The number of participants has increased twofold as compared to last year. The winners and finalists were selected from 25 open source organizations.

Fawwaz, whose full name is Maharaj Fawwaz A. Yusran, has other achievements to his credit, such as being selected the school leader in 2014-2015 at the Colchester Academy, United Kingdom and being presented a gold medal in the North Essex Mathematics Olympiad in 2014 for his school. He was the only Indonesian student who succeeded in winning a gold medal in the Mathematics Olympiad for his school in the United Kingdom. Moreover, he was the finalist of Code Improve for students all over Indonesia in 2016.
